Most preferences are self-explanatory. The preferences that might need further information are described here.

The Route time multiplier is useful if you drive slower (for example, tow a trailer), or faster (drive a Corvette) than the route time Apple maps returns. For example, in the screen shot below, it says for the drive time Apple reports, multiply that value by 1.25. So if Apple says it takes 60 minutes to drive from A to B, instead use 60 X 1.25 = 75 minutes.
Create a To Do list of items that you use for every road trip. Then copy this list to the document. See the File Info page for more info.
Dates preferences.
Auto-update route pin time and date values.
When not checked, no route pin date and time values change unless you manually change them.
When checked:
— If you change a route pin date and time, all succeeding route pin date and time values are updated when you click on them within the route pin list.
— If you update the routes, the route pin date and time values are updated.
The “Update Route Pin Date & Time Values” menu option will still work the same regardless of the preference setting (this command will update all route pin date and time values).
Time Zone.
This allows you to set the default time zone. The time zone does not change the date and time values, instead it may change their display value. If you change a time zone, you need to close and open any open documents. This resets the date and time displays to the new time zone.
For example, you live in San Diego (Pacific time zone) and you’re planning a road trip around Chicago (Central time zone). Set the time zone to Central Time, and then set the date and time values for your map pins. Now if you open the document in Chicago using the Central Time zone, the values will not advance two hours from Pacific Time to Central Time.
New Route Pins.
This sets the departure date preferences for new route pins as discussed in the Pin Dates section.
